Interesting Information on Horse Racing You Probably Didn’t Know

It is even more dangerous in case of fast-pace races, because the faster the horses run, more severe is the fall and the resulting injury. The California Senate passed a bill regarding the same issue following Barbaro’s death. Well, we hope so too, otherwise, it won’t be too long for the reign of this beloved sport to come to an end.

. Experts say that laying softer tracks like polytracks, can be safer for the horses than the hard-mud surfaces. According to the Jockey’s Guild statistics, 128 riders have died in America on the racetracks since the year 1940. Measures like giving better financial aid to the injured jockeys and implementation of on-site medical facilities can be taken.

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association has stated that its Safety and Integrity Alliance will help implement all these measures.

Not only for the horses, horse racing is life-threatening to the jockeys too. They often fall down from their horse and are crippled by the other horses running over them, causing spinal cord and even brain injuries

5 myths of sports betting legalization

If something shady were to occur in a game around a betting proposition, raised awareness by the public about gambling in general would help highlight any improprieties before, during and after the match.

Mr. When I lose this money, it’s gone, and I can’t bet until I put more money on deposit. Sen. The two biggest reasons people bet with bookies (beyond the lack of alternatives) are the convenience and the line of credit. In addition, asking for a percentage based on the overall handle (total amount wagered) will cut into the margin of the sports books too significantly.

The National Council on Problem Gamblers has found that problem gamblers are most often involved in illegal gambling, so moving toward a model where more gamblers are doing it legally can only help.

Here’s an example. “But for the FBI knocking on our door and notifying us about Donaghy’s betting, none of the systems that we then had in place had captured any betting by Tim Donaghy.”

In addition, game fixing would be easier in a world where fewer people track or are even aware of things like point spreads and over/under bets. Purdum, an expert on the subject, has been vocal in his belief that online sports gambling will need to be a big part of the new legalization plan, and I share his belief, as betting on a phone and computer is simply much more convenient than driving to a brick-and-mortar sports book and making a wager. First off, the government will only legalize if it is going to get significant revenue. 5: It will create greater risk for game fixing

My answer is a solid maybe. District Court Judge Mary Ann Medler ruled in favor of CBC, stating that “statistics are part of the public domain and can be used at no cost by fantasy companies.” One would infer that the same would apply to legal bookmaking operations.. This credit relationship will be hard for many gamblers to give up.

Las Vegas sports book operators are already looking to expand to other states. Since sports gambling is currently something that happens in the shadows, problem gamblers are likely to hide in that shadow until it is too late.

And I have heard some mention licensing fees for data, but haven’t we already covered that in lawsuits against both the NBA and Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM)? In both cases, statistics and data were ruled to be public, not a private asset for which the leagues could charge a license fee.

This is the easiest myth to dispel. Legalized sports betting would elevate these now somewhat esoteric notions into the mainstream conversation about sports. It’s a pretty reasonable assumption that it’s easier to fix a game in an environment where most of the money wagered is impossible to discover or track by the government. However, there are certainly some myths that I believe can be dispelled.

The topic of federal legalization of sports betting has been brought up before, but it has gained steam since Adam Silver’s November New York Times op-ed and after Silver’s cover story in ESPN The Magazine’s Gambling Issue. I am concerned that the overall pie, even with online gambling, may not be large enough for the leagues to make the money they are hoping for.

Until many of these questions are answered, it will be difficult to draw any hard conclusions about the ramifications of legalized sports gambling in the U.S. Concerts, shows, high-end nightclubs and restaurants draw people to Vegas as much as the gambling does. In order to grow the pie large enough, these conveniences must be provided to gamblers. U.S. How will it be regulated? How involved will the government be? Will it be federal enforcement or on a state level?

Here are the top five myths about legalizing sports betting and why they’re wrong:

When I think about the best way to legalize sports gambling from a logistical standpoint, I get a headache.

I understand the argument that legalized sports betting could expose more people to gambling and the increased ease and access will create more problem gamblers, but I simply don’t buy it. Are fewer people gambling because they can do it in their home state?

Myth No. In the past two decades, although total revenue has risen, percentage of revenue from gambling has decreased from close to 60 percent to last year’s 38 percent. Those who believe that legalized sports betting will lead to more risk of game fixing simply don’t understand why games are fixed. Whyte, executive director of the NCPG, told my ESPN colleague David Purdum.

At any rate, I really don’t see legalized sports betting in other states having a big impact on the sports betting business in Vegas.

In that time span, we all know that Vegas has flourished. This mirrors a similar concern that some had 25 years ago when Indian and commercial casinos began sprouting up all over the U.S.

Once games happen, the stats are public domain. 2: It will create more “problem gamblers”

Furthermore, once sports betting becomes legal the negative stigma behind it will eventually disappear, which will make it a bit easier for problem gamblers to ask for help. 4: It will damage the sports betting business in Las Vegas

In the most relevant case, CBC, the parent company of CDM Sports, a fantasy provider, sued MLBAM after being denied a new fantasy sports license. John McCain (R-Ariz.) also recently said that Congress needs to hold hearings to discuss legalizing sports betting.

Myth No. Illegal sports betting has some characteristics that can lead to problem gambling more than legal betting would.

Myth No. These days, most bookies provide both a phone number and website where bets can be made. If it’s legalized, there will be huge changes, but some assumptions are simply off.

Those who believe this simply don’t understand how sports betting with a bookie works. In addition, customers are far more inclined to place a wager when they don’t have to put any money down.

Since bookies will not have to pay taxes or licensing fees, they will be able to offer better margins or incentives to their customers. The experience of going to Vegas is becoming less and less about putting down a sports bet and more and more about the experience of everything else. There are no credit checks or margin calls until it is time for me to pay. Maybe more so.

I see the same trend happening if sports betting gets legalized in the U.S. 3: It will put local illegal bookies out of business

Silver echoed this sentiment when discussing his personal revelation in an exclusive interview with ESPN. But let’s say I have a bad losing streak and end up down more than $1,000. This is not how most bookies work. In the latter case, I set up a credit arrangement with Illegal Book B and we agree that I will pay every time I go over $1,000. Yes, trademark images and logos would be a different story, so I could see the leagues getting marketing deals, but I don’t see that as a huge windfall for the leagues.

Myth No. In fact, there’s an argument that exposing more people to sports gambling in their native states will make the general concept of sports gambling more approachable, ultimately leading to a larger overall percentage of sports fans-turned-gamblers.

There are a lot of unanswered questions regarding legalization of sports gambling in the U.S., and it will be fascinating to watch how it unfolds in the next few years. Many bookies will allow me to get more credit and continue to gamble. This year, it is on pace to welcome a record 40 million visitors. Vegas has had to reinvent itself as a place that is about more than just gambling. bookmaking powerhouse William Hill has already set up an operation in New Jersey, and MGM CEO Jim Murren has said his company is interested in expansion.

While it seems that the question of legalizing sports betting presently is more of an if than a when, there remains a great deal of uncertainty regarding what it would look like. Some are based on a time frame, while others are based on going over agreed-upon limits. Illegal gambling is one of the factors that’s associated with gambling addiction,” Keith S. Say I set up an account with Legal Sportsbook A.

The real value for them will be potential marketing dollars and increased fan engagement, not licensing fees for data or direct revenue from wagering.

There is simply no way the leagues could ask for a percentage piece of gambling revenue, as this would result in a huge conflict of interest. 1: It will result in large revenue for the leagues

Those betting with bookies have predetermined settlement terms. There are going to be a lot of hands in the cookie jar. (It’s common for bookies to offer rebates to their big customers.) This will be difficult for legal bookmakers to compete with.

The thought process here is that with legalized sports betting available locally, there will be less interest in making the trek to Sin City to wager on sports. The U.S. I will likely have to put money on deposit to do so. “The Donaghy controversy also made me aware how important it is that we have a way of monitoring irregular activity on our games,” Silver said. Second, operators will need to run a cost-effective business, which may prove difficult if there are a lot of other hands to feed besides the government.

Myth No. operation for the U.K. This is the type of financial recklessness associated with problem gambling.

“One of the things that makes sports betting so interesting is that it is probably by far the most widely participated in form of illegal gambling

Get Smarter By Knowing the Different Types of Governments That Exist

This is how a timocracy turns into an oligarchy, where riches are concentrated in the hands of a few.

Plato also highlights problems an oligarchy will face as a result of this divide.

? The rich men will consolidate power and wealth leaving the poor desperate for social emancipation, causing them to rebel against the oligarchs.

? Also, the threat from foreign aggressors may be greater, as the governing class, due to their far lesser numbers will be unable to amass a huge army, they will be reluctant to arm the oppressed working class too, fearing a revolt.. Like before, Plato says that the oligarch can be the son of a timocratic king, but without the love of honor and integrity that the latter possessed. The laws are therefore changed to enable only the ruling class to hold great wealth, thereby guaranteeing their supremacy over the worker class. However, he is also astute as he knows mindless spending can bring even a rich man to his knees and is therefore, moderate in his pursuit of materialistic pleasures.

Although the aristocratic form of government as described by Plato expressly forbids the king from owning property (his needs are satisfied by the voluntary contributions of his people) the kings in a timocracy and oligarchy are allowed to do so. They accumulate wealth and spend it, often in excess, leading to a dependence on monetary policy and increase in the demand of wealth in the general population. He is more in tune with materialism and gives in wholeheartedly to the accumulation of money and riches

How to Bet the Kentucky Derby: A Beginner’s Guide

Therefore, betting on him won’t yield a big payout. What’s a superfecta anyway, and how do you bet one?

Picking a Horse

There are 20 horses in the field for the Kentucky Derby, though as of now only 19 will be running Saturday (#11 Hopportunity was “scratched.”) All the horses are 3-year-old male thoroughbreds, which means they’re young horses with lots of talent that is still developing and not a ton of experience.

Many casual bettors will pick a horse based on name or looks, but there are better ways to judge the odds for whether a horse has a shot at winning. For a superfecta you pick the top four finishers in the right order. The Kentucky Derby is one and a quarter miles long, longer than any race these horses have run before, so the winner will need stamina.

Odds and Favorites

When you look at a race form there will be a number in parentheses after each horse’s name. The words “first, second, and third,” are replaced by “win, place, and show.” If you think your horse is pretty good but not going to come in first, you can bet that he will “place,” — that is, come in first or second. Give that a good look to see who’s done well recently.

Look for a horse that has won most of his races by a good length. Horses with lower first number (10 and down) are considered top contenders.

Betting on a horse with good odds will not pay out much money if they win. If you’re not going to be in Louisville for the big day, you can head to your local racetrack or off-track betting outlet and place a bet there.

Like all sports, horse racing has its own language that can be confusing to casual watchers. He’s dominated all the races he’s run so far and all eyes will be on him. A horse that goes into the race with 50-1 odds but comes in first place will pay out the most money to the bettor. If your horse comes in any of those positions, you’ll get money.

If you’re sure you’ve got the winner and you only want to place a simple bet for him to come in first, go ahead and bet your money that way. Saturday. You’re trying to hit the sweet spot: a horse with okay odds who you think has a shot at winning.

The favorite going into this weekend is California Chrome, with 5-2 odds. That number shows what the odds are that the horse will win. Here’s a quick guide:

Exacta: You pick the two horses you think will come in first and second, in that order.

Trifecta: Pick the three horses you think will come in first, second, and third – in the right order.

Superfecta: You guessed it. It looks something like this: Vicar’s In Trouble (20-1).

Horses with a high first number (like 20-1 or 50-1) are considered unlikely to win the race. Conversely, betting on a horse with bad odds will pay out a lot of money if they do win.

Here’s our guide to making sense of the Run for the Roses. If you’re in it for the thrill of victory alone (and not the money), he’s a good bet.

Betting on Your Picks: “I’ll take $2 to win on the four horse, please.”

In horse racing, you need to bet on what place the horse will come in. Like it’s name implies, the superfecta pays out big bucks if you manage to get it right.

You’ve got your mint julep and your fancy hat ready for the Kentucky Derby, but are you ready to place your bet on the horse you think will win?

Now it’s off to the races. Good luck racing fans!. Say, “I’ll bet $2 on (horse’s name or number) to win.”

If you’re done with the beginner stage of betting, you can up your odds of winning by doing more complicated bets that yield bigger payouts: exactas, trifectas, and superfectas. Each horse will have a record of recent races he’s run, what place he finished, and how far ahead of the other horses he was. You can place your bet anytime up until about 20 minutes before the race goes off at 6:24 p.m. Or you can bet that he will “show,” — that is, come in first, second, or third

Compulsive Gambling Leaves a Trail of Destruction

This was In addition to fudging bank statements so that she didn’t know he was siphoning off their other savings account. Gamblers do not think any further ahead than the next bet. I’ve been talking to a disease for most of my life, not a real father. His weird relationship with money was passed on to his kids. By that time, the damage is done and it is usually irreversible.

© by Macteacher 2013

Forgiveness Comes…Eventually

My father’s inability to own up to his destructive behavior is a big reason for my current unwillingness to speak to him. Money enables the gambler to “stay in the action,” a gambling term for active betting.

It’s Not Just The Betting

A gambler’s true addiction is money. He had money for expensive vacations, expensive jewelry and nice cars, but paying for his kids college education was out of his reach. I also resent all the money that my grandparents left being swallowed up by his disease. Any financial relief is out of reach because no matter how much money a gambler can get their hands on, it is never enough to satisfy their insatiable craving for betting.

Almost as Bad as the Gambling…the Lying

When we uncovered my father’s gambling addiction, the devastation to my family unit was irreparable. As an adult child I also am suddenly worried about having to support my parents at some point. This makes gambling a very tough addiction to break, because like food addictions, the gambler is addicted to something they have to use in everyday life – money.

Gam-Anon and other organizations preach forgiveness above all else. Their low self esteem compels them to live like high rollers – and spend on luxuries when they can’t even pay the mortgage. The sum total of my father’s income is now a meager Social Security check.

This is another symptom of the compulsive gambler: Their skewed relationship with money. In order to keep their secret they will lie to anyone, spouses, children, parents, coworkers and friends. We figured it out because my father had tripped himself up by trying to cover his tracks. If it had not been for my quick thinking, they would have lost everything. He was never generous with money, even though he always had a wad of bills in his pocket. My sister and I have struggled for most of our adult lives to build a healthy respect for money. I know that I will eventually have to forgive, right now I’m just trying to figure out how to sit in the same room with a parent that I never actually liked or trusted.

The other part of me resents his obsession with money and being the hot shot while I was growing up. How does someone live with themselves?

It’s Never Enough

A man who has spent a lifetime telling other people how to invest for emergencies has ended up penniless. Part of me wonders how he sat down over breakfast every morning with a woman who has taken care of him for 50 years, while he was robbing her blind. He has no assets. They spend their lives trying to cover their tracks. He was a fairly successful insurance man with 50 years in the business, yet when the true extent of his addiction came to light last year, we were dumbfounded. Money is what they need to fuel their habit of placing bets, whether it be lotto cards, horse racing or blackjack. Gamblers will function quite well as long as they have a ready source of cash, such as a family member or income from a business or investments. They make financial decisions based on how much money they can hoard for gambling. In the blink of an eye, more than half was gone. This inability to plan for the future is another symptom of the disease of compulsive gambling. He never saw any reason to purchase any property or make any sound investments. You just get worn out and tired, just really tired..

It’s Exhausting For the Family

Gamblers Can Keep on Going…

The insidious thing about gambling is that a gambler who has access to money can literally support their habit for many years without getting caught. They view money as something to play with, almost like Monopoly money. Gambling is a disease after all, and you can’t blame someone for being sick. Any adult child of a compulsive gambler who thinks they will see any type of inheritance is fooling themselves.

The other insidious thing about problem gamblers or compulsive gamblers is the pathological lying. It was money she was counting on to supplement their income when they reached their eighties. It has been almost a year since the truth was revealed, and I am still angry at the waste and the bleak future my parents face as their fixed income slowly becomes inadequate to meet their needs as they get older. Money is slowly siphoned from the source until there is nothing left. He has no savings, and he is too old to make up for lost time. This is not something I should have to worry about with people who earned a good living during their work lives. Deep down they hate themselves for their habit, but like children, they are unwilling to come clean.

How Do They Live With Themselves?

Even though I know it is a disease and he really can’t help himself, part of me resents him for not being adult enough to seek help sooner. It’s a twisted mindset that allows them to blow everything they have while bills go unpaid. As most adult children of any kind of addict know, it’s not that you actually hate them – that’s too toxic to carry around. They live their lives in a fantasy world where the next big win is right around the corner. As it turned out, my father had helped himself to an annuity my mother had religiously contributed to every month for 25 years during the course of her teaching career. We’ve both finally reached a place of sanity and serenity in our own lives.

They Usually End Up Penniless

My father has reached his seventies without saving a penny. If not for my mother’s pension, they would be out on the street.

Some gamblers do experience big payoffs, but the money is quickly spent on placing more, and bigger bets

Video of Laquan McDonald shooting could shock Chicago

Public release of this video could foment civil unrest; community leaders are already calling for calm. Officially, the fundamental philosophy and the public policy of our government, including the state of Illinois, is that all persons are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts and policies of those who represent them as public officials and public employees. The law states that an “ongoing investigation” is only an exemption to public disclosure if the agency that received the FOIA request is the one actually conducting the probe.

Politically, it’s complicated. “In this case unfortunately, it appears an officer violated that trust at every level.” And on Tuesday, the officer who shot McDonald, Jason Van Dyke, was charged with first-degree murder.

Politically complicated but legally simple

In practice, however, anyone who has spent time in a courthouse or a government agency knows that while records are theoretically “public,” public agencies cloak themselves in the protections of foot-dragging and 1970s-era recordkeeping, which renders public records effectively private — or, even worse, lost in filing room oblivion.

Don’t believe me? Does anyone else find it ironic that a Cook County Circuit Court judge issued an 18-page ruling that forced a government agency to make records public — and that 18-page ruling itself is nowhere to be found on the Internet? In other words, a government entity ordered another government entity to make a record available to the public, but didn’t bother to make that order accessible to the public.

Maybe it’s out there.

Of course, that’s said with a wink and a nod, and dripping with the irony it deserves.

Maybe the case demonstrates the reality of open records laws: Every person is entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government — as long as the person is willing to: ask for the specific records in writing, wait for the government to delay responding, receive a denial letter from the government, and finally hire a lawyer and litigate the matter in court. But you shouldn’t need an advanced degree in Google to track down public records — especially one that could be scanned and uploaded with a free app on a smartphone in about three minutes.

Internet aside, what do you think would happen if you telephoned the Cook County Courthouse to ask for a copy of this public opinion to be faxed to you? You can play a popular attorney betting game called “How many times will I be transferred to different people?” And if you like parlay bets, you can also wager on whether your call will be outright disconnected by “accident” at some point. And even if you win in court and get a favorable order from the judge, well, good luck finding that public document online.

Now, because the court hasn’t made its own order readily available online, this information has to be cobbled from private sources — as in journalists, the same people who requested this information in the first place.

The video is expected to show the officer shooting McDonald even as he lay on the ground. Law enforcement agencies are, by their nature, keepers of sensitive information.

Legally, though, it was a simple decision. Maybe someone else found it on the “Dark Web,” or the ARPANET, or on Silk Road. Public information is supposed to be public. In the McDonald case, Chicago PD initially denied the press’s Freedom of Information Act request for the video, claiming it was legally permitted to refuse. The mayor’s own statement is likely to strain relations with law enforcement.

When documents can be withheld

The judge, Franklin Valderrama, not only ordered the video released by Wednesday, he also denied a motion from the city to appeal the decision, which all but assures this will happen.

Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently claimed, along with the Chicago Police Department, that release of the video might compromise an ongoing investigation. I haven’t bothered to ask.

Of course, there are plenty of diligent, hardworking courthouse employees too, but they are no match for the institutionalized inertia and disorganization of your average antiquated government filing system. Whether such a video should be publicly released is both a political issue and a legal issue.

The police department had the burden to prove by clear and convincing evidence that disclosure would either actually interfere with active administrative enforcement proceedings (including active investigations of alleged police misconduct), or it had to show substantial likelihood that disclosure would deprive someone of a fair trial or hearing. They cannot be as presumptively open as other government records.

Police say McDonald had PCP in his system when he died and was refusing police commands to drop a 4-inch knife.

Just try to find the order online

It seems that the Chicago Police Deparment had no ongoing investigation of its own.

Police records are understandably a little different.

Illinois law permits a public body to withhold records when disclosure would interfere with active administrative enforcement proceedings conducted by the public body that received the FOIA request, or if disclosure would create a substantial likelihood that a person will be deprived of a fair trial or an impartial hearing. A Chicago Tribune columnist has said releasing the video could tear the city apart. Instead, it’s federal authorities that are considering charges or some other action against the officer. It’s easy to miss the prerequisite upon which the judge relied in ordering disclosure. But then again, I don’t often bother to ask any more. But last week, the mayor’s office released a statement suggesting that even Hizzoner is conflicted about the video: “Police officers are entrusted to uphold the law, and to provide safety to our residents,” the mayor said. Therefore, no law shielded the Chicago PD from disclosure. To be fair, this clerk’s office might spring into action to fax, email or even mail copies of court orders at my mere request.

A casual reading of the law might appear to militate in favor of the police and withholding the video.

Negative Effects of Gambling

Forget satisfaction or peace, it is not even refreshing in the real sense. It only leads to a thoughtless expenditure of money and valuables.

You could be at gunpoint or holding the gun. Because of this, they land in worse situations and take the wrong decisions in life.. This proves to be detrimental to their social and family life. Thus, gambling practices cause a huge financial burden on the families of the affected and on the society at large.

? Substances of abuse are served at casinos and in pubs and clubs, thus increasing the likelihood of gamblers consuming them. In spite of the losses incurred, they continue betting. ? Addiction to gambling has been linked with substance abuse. The effect is similar to that of having a drug or a drink, which is why gambling changes one’s mental state and mood.

? A majority of those addicted to gambling have substance abuse disorders.

A recreational activity is supposed to be refreshing and relaxing, but something like gambling is contrary to the very purpose of recreation. The stress of risking huge amounts of money or the frustration after losing it can increase the tendency of abuse in gamblers. Some go that way to forget the sorrow of losing big sums when gambling.
